Medigap Plan F is one of the standardized Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) plans available to individuals enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).
Medigap Plan F Offers Coverage for the Following:
1. Inpatient Services
Medigap Plan F offers coverage for Part A coinsurance and hospital costs. It extends this coverage up to an additional 365 days after Original Medicare benefits have been exhausted.
Plan F pays for the Medicare Part A deductible.
It also covers Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) coinsurance.
2. Outpatient Services
Medigap Plan F Covers Part B coinsurance or copayment and Deductibles.
3. Blood
Plan F Covers the first three pints of blood needed for a transfusion. The cost of the blood would normally be the patient’s responsibility unless the provider received the blood as a donation from a blood bank.
4. Hospice
Plan F Includes coverage for hospice care coinsurance or copayment.
5. Excess Charges
Plan F also covers Medicare Part B excess charges. An excess charge is a 15% fee that some doctors may bill beneficiaries beyond what Medicare covers. Excess charges may apply if you use providers who don”t accept Medicare assignment.
6. Foreign Travel Emergency Coverage
This plan also offers coverage for foreign travel emergency care, covering 80% of eligible emergency care costs during the first 60 days of your trip.
Additional Information
Enrollments into Plan F were closed to new Medicare enrollees starting in 2020. People who were already enrolled in Plan F before 2020 could keep their coverage, and those eligible for Medicare before 2020 could still enroll. Eligibility for Medigap plans generally requires enrollment in both Medicare Part A and Part B. Because legislation has phased out certain Medigap plans, including Plan F, for newly eligible Medicare beneficiaries, if you became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, you are not able to purchase Plan F.
It”s essential to verify the most current information as regulations and plan availability continues to change. You can contact Medicare, visit medicare.gov, or consult with a licensed insurance agent for the latest details on Medigap plans.
